DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF LARGE GREAT LAKES BULK CARRIERS TO WAVE-EXCITED LOADS

An integrated analysis of hull dynamic response to wave-excited loads is presented. Full-scale stresses and environmental data measured on board three Great Lakes bulk carriers are correlated for calibration of the analytical results. The correlation includes the low-frequency (wave-induced), the high-frequency (springing), and the combined response. Information regarding buoy test results and wind and wave data are also treated. The effects on springing and on the combined dynamic response due to changes in several design and operational variables are discussed by way of a parametric study. The discussion covers trends due to changes in sea state, stage of wavy development, ship speed, ship draft, heading angle, and ship size. Possible criteria for the determination of longitudinal strength requirements of Great Lakes bulk carriers are also discussed.
