FILLING AND EMPTYING SYSTEM FOR MEDIUM-LIFT LOCKS, TRINITY RIVER, TEXAS
Tests were conducted on a 1:25-scale model to develop a bottom longitudinal filling and emptying system for six 84-ft-wide by 655-ft-long medium-lift locks proposed on the Trinity River in Texas. The lifts incorporated in the designs studied ranged from 30 to 57 ft; however, a 41-ft lift was used to develop the optimum filling and emptying system. Data for lifts up to 100 ft were obtained with the recommended design for future benefit. The level of the water surface in the lock chamber at which the filling and emptying valves should begin closing to eliminate overtravel and undertravel of the water surface in the lock chamber was determined.
