ON THE INFLUENCE OF THE WAVES ON THE UNDERKEEL CLEARANCE OF WATERWAYS
This paper presents a method for determining a safe but not excessive fairway depth for anticipated shallow-water traffic. Rules of thumb applied so far have resulted to some extent in over dimensioning on safety grounds. Methods used for deep-water conditions cannot be applied in shallow-water conditions without adjustment. Attention is given to the effect of waves on underkeel clearance, although squat is not discussed in detail. Theoretical results are compared with each other and with other experimental results. An example of underkeel clearance calculation is presented together with an assessment of its applicability. Recommendations are given for fairway dimensioning and for future research. Good agreement between the norms applied in this study and calculation results is obtained. Order from: BSRA as No. 46,216.
