SALT IN SEA ATMOSPHERE AND ITS REMOVAL FOR GAS TURBINES
This is an English version of the paper. It describes an experimental study of the salt concentration and size distribution of airborne sea salt particles with the aim of establishing design principles for a suitable demister system. Measurements were made on board four different ships, a 10,000-gt class cargo liner, a 200,000-dwt tanker and two destroyer escorts. The results when normalised, showed reasonably good agreement with theoretical data. Additionally, the performance characteristics, e.g. pressure loss and collection efficiencies of the demister elements (fibrous filter and vane separator) were determined by laboratory tests. Based on the results, a demister system applicable to actual ships was proposed and its performance for various weather conditions predicted.
