WET WELDING ELIMINATES DRYDOCKING

A technique has been developed whereby certain steels can be welded underwater without cracking. Mild-steel or austenitic electrodes are used according to whether the carbon equivalent of the steel is less or more than 0-4. A detailded description is given of the application of the procedure by the U.S. Navy to the USS Newport News for the outboard blanking off of sea connections and the sealing of stern tubes and strut bearings prior to laying-up the ship. In all, some 62 hull openings of varying sizes below the waterline were closed.
