QUALIFICATION PROGRAM FOR USE OF CONCRETE FOR MARINE LNG TANKAGE
This paper describes proposed marine LNG facilities for the liquefaction and regasification ends of the pipeline. This and maintenance considerations prompted an investigation to simplify the containment system and to reduce its cost. It was proposed to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) that a research and test program be established to qualify prestressed concrete as a secondary barrier. They have accepted the program concept and it is now in the financial development stage. The proposed use of prestressed concrete as a marine LNG secondary barrier and the program to qualify this material to USCG requirements is the subject of this paper. The Author's Company presented the USCG acceptance to MARAD and, at the same time, requested financial support for the program. MARAD agreed to support on a cost sharing basis provided the remainder came from a variety of non-governmental or commercial organizations. The goal for the latter is almost completed. The list of financial supporters includes U.S. and international commercial organizations and professional societies from both the marine and prestressed concrete fields. Actual program software and hardware is expected to start sometime this year.
