ASPECTS OF THE NATIONAL SHIPBUILDING RESEARCH PROGRAM WHICH IMPACT ON OWNERS, DESIGNERS, REGULATORS AND SUPPLIERS

The National Shipbuilding Research Program is unprecedented because it is applied with an intentional bias in behalf of shipbuilders, i.e., the common objective of the various research categories is to improve shipbuilding productivity. One category, "Outfitting and Production Aids" addresses numerous and diverse subjects. But the research activity is not just applying natural laws, empirical methods and/or economic analyses. Everything necessary to get a productive end product into general implementation is included. Thus the concerns of all parties to the shipbuilding process must be studied. These considerations are disclosing that owners, designers, regulators and suppliers are also benefiting. And, this greater understanding is generating ideas which could lead to more efficient services that each of the parties associated with shipbuilding can perform for the others. This paper describes some of the projects, further advertises end products, and is intended to stimulate discussion on the ideas evolving from the research.
