METHANOL AS A FUEL

The interest in methanol as a source of energy has grown, through the necessity of using fuels other than those derived from petroleum. During the past fifty years, methanol has mainly been known as a basic material of the chemical industry. Today, it is most widely used as an alternative to gasoline in automobiles. A mixture of gasoline and methanol can be used as a fuel in combustion engines without any great modifications of the engine. Methanol can be produced from many raw materials, such as natural gas, coal, or waste, by conventional techniques. Transportation and storage for different purposes present no problems. Methanol can be used as a fuel for power plants, for heating, for process heat in industry, and as an electrolyte in fuel cells. In order to discuss and evaluate the rapid development of methanol as a fuel, an international symposium was held in Stockholm on March 23, 1976. /TRRL/
