TYRE SAFETY PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS: REVIEW AND RECOMMENDATION FOR RESEARCH
This report presents the outcome of stage I of a proposed two-stage study of pneumatic tyres. It includes a critical survey of existing information concerning tyres and their relationship to vehicle control and accident reduction, and recommendations for stage II of the study. In the original proposal for the study, it was commented that the performance characteristics of tyres have literally been taken for granted in Australia, and that, as far as the authors were aware, only one viable cornering tester was in operation in Australia. With the accelerating rate of tyre research in other countries, the need for adequate traction test facilities here is becoming more urgent: the benefits of overseas research, especially in government regulations for tyre traction, cannot be applied and evaluated here until such facilities are available. The material in this report is arranged in three parts. Part a is a review, with critical comment, of most aspects of tyre traction and its relationship to vehicle performance. Part b is a summary of visits to overseas tyre research centres; tyre test methods, current research and future trends are indicated. Part C includes a summary of the current state of tyre traction knowledge, and recommendations for a tyre research programme. /Author/TRRL/
