QUANTITATIVE X-RAY DIFFRACTION ANALYSIS OF CEMENTS
This report describes the quantitative x-ray analysis of cement using a method first published by Berger et al in 1964. The accuracy and precision of the method was investigated. The cement lts 12 was analysed nine times and gave standard deviations for alite, belite and the aluminate and ferrite phases of 0.5, 0.9, 0.3, 0.4% respectively. These compare favourably with results from other workers. Thirty-seven different cements were analysed by this method. The accuracy of the analyses was investigated by correlating the estimates of compound composition against the compressive strength of concrete. It was found that the bogue potential compound composition was better than estimates produced by quantitative x-ray diffraction for predicting compressive strengths. Nine Japanese portland cements were analysed by this x-ray method. The results were not satisfactory. It is thought that this is because the mineral composition of New Zealand cements differs from that of the Japanese. Nevertheless the present method of quantitative x-ray diffraction analysis is suitable for the rapid analysis of a large number of a given set of cements to determine those cements whose compound composition differs markedly from the others.(a) /TRRL/
