This subject is extensive and brings together a number of streams of research relative to flexible pavements. This involves amongst other considerations, the multi-layer elastic theory, empirical applications of pavement theory and the AASHO road test results. Much of the research in the 1960s and 1970s has extended the findings of the AASHO road test to current pavement design problems particularly with regard to repetitive loading. This paper endeavours to summarise the present state of the art, and bring out what the author considers are important principles to be considered for asphalt pavements, and the implications of these principles for asphalt mix design and laying practices. /Author/TRRL/
