This publication deals with two of the most demanding planning tasks, firstly renewal, reconstruction and restoration of the building stock. Different objectives, methods, results and their importance to the trade are shown. Secondly traffic clearances, their necessity and how they influence the retail trade, are discussed. The publication reflects the new ideas in urban planning and development. The risk of closing down for the individual shop by external influence is dealt with in a special chapter. Special interest has been given to exposed community centres. Improvement measures for town centre environment are discussed. A last chapter describes some functions of the street, especially the design of pedestrian streets and how to increase their attractiveness. /TRRL/
