GROUND WATER DRAINAGE WITH VITRIFIED CLAY PIPES - PART ONE

The design criteria and construction of filter drains is described in relation to the requirements and defects of such drains. The purpose of filter drains is described as achieving permeability with the object of lowering the water table and reducing pore-water pressure in undisturbed or filled ground - requiring large pores in the filter; and avoiding soil migration - requiring small pores in the filter. The author describes means of excluding soil particles from vitrified clay ground water drains by surrounding the pipelines with graded granular filters. Information is also included on the hydraulic design of filter drains. /TRRL/
