COMPREHENSIVE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

The report discusses the concept of "traffic management" as a means of achieving a compromise between the requirements of traffic movement and the local environment. Schemes designed for the management of traffic have usually meant relieving pressure at isolated points of a road network to provide more capacity. The objectives should now be widened to provide for specific types of movement and to reduce conflicts between each type. This approach is termed comprehensive traffic management and provides for the movement of people and goods by different modes and not just vehicle movement. Worked examples of this approach to the solution of traffic management problems are discussed. /TRRL/
