CONVERSION OF MAPPED ROUTE INFORMATION INTO DIGITISED DATA ON MAGNETIC TAPE
Data from two roadside interview surveys in the lake district and Yorkshore Dales National Parks included drivers' route information recorded on mimeographed maps of the area. The method used to translate the route into a digitised form on magnetic tape is described in this report. A suite of programs has been written to combine the route information with other questionnaire data and includes data checking and editing operations. The final output for each questionnaire gives comprehensive data on origin, destination, journey purpose, stop locations and durations and socio-economic information as well as the geographical details of the route. Although some of the processing operations are specific to the icl 4/70 software, the programs are written in FORTRAN and could be adapted for other machines and survey networks.
