PHASE COMPARISON SONAR. PHASE II. TEST RESULTS

A phase comparison sonar was developed and tested aboard the PCH-1 Hydrofoil to determine the feasibility of detecting obstacles, floating on or slightly below the sea surface, in the path of the ship's foils. Provisions were incorporated in the sonar design so that a side looking sonar mode could be tested while the craft was operating foilborne at speeds up to 40 kn. The sonar transducers and receiver were calibrated prior to the foilborne tests so that the magnitude of the flow noise could be measured in the sonar receiver bandwidth which is centered at 152 kHz.
