EVALUATION OF RECYCLING BITUMINOUS PAVEMENT

A progress report is presented of a bituminous recylcing project which meets existing pollution requirements and utilizes conventional equipment for mixing and placing the mix. The plant operation is essentially the same as a conventional plant except for a higher temperature of aggregate leaving the drier, and provisions for adding the salvaged bituminous material to the pugmill. The project involves the reconstruction of a mile long urban street. The old roadway that is being recycled is 48 feet wide and has 12 inches of gravel base and 4 inches of plant mixed bituminous surfacing. The new roadway will be a 4-lane divided expressway plus turn lanes with concrete curb and gutter. Details are given of the removal of the bituminous mat and aggregate base, the crushing of salvaged bituminous material, the selection of the recycling plant site, plant operation, the storage of recycled mix, the sampling schedule and the test results.
