CONTRIBUTION OF THE STUDY OF CATIONIC INTERFACIAL ACTIVITY OF ROAD ASPHALTS
CONTRIBUTION A L'ETUDE DE LA TENSIO-ACTIVITE CATIONIQUE DES BITUMES ROUTIERS
The first part sets out general data about the use of asphalt in road construction, their elaboration, their physico-chemical properties and their structure. It is pointed out how important are the interfacial properties in the coating of solid materials and in the properties of composites where they occur as binders. The second part shows how acid and basic polar compounds bear a part in the interfacial properties such as the interfacial tension against aqueous phases and the wetting of solids. The behaviour of polar compounds is shown to be an anionic but also a cationic one. It is possible to draw a comparison between the behaviour of polar compounds extracted from asphalt as nitrogen bases and the behaviour of surface active compounds used as anti-stripping additives. The third part deals with the cationic interfacial activity. From this point of view, five road asphalts are studied with reference to two amines: n-dode-cylamine and cyclododecylamine. In any case, their interfacial activity is shown to be in the same range as the activity of cyclododecylamine. But it was not possible to simulate completely the behaviour of an asphalts by that of such an amine: non-active compounds occurring in asphalts are able to modify interfacial adsorption conditions of the interfacial cationic active compounds.
