ECONOMIC VIABILITY OF NUCLEAR POWERED ULTRA LARGE CRUDE CARRIERS
The paper outlines the experience of the Newport News Shipyard, in the United States, as well as the present facilities, and shows how this would enable the yard to build 600,000 dwt nuclear tankers. Cost estimates for one such ship vary from 226 million dollars (1973) to 370 million dollars (1974). Cost analyses for 1974 and 1981 are summarized, and the required freight rates for fossil and nuclear fuels are: 10.11 versus 10.46 (1974) and 11.53 versus 11.08 (1981), all figures in dollars per ton freighted.
