STUDY OF DIESEL ENGINE NOISE AND VIBRATION SOURCES USING SIMULATION TECHNIQUES

This paper deals with some of the problems encountered when optimising the reduction of diesel engine noise, because of the complexity of its numerous sources and the varying parameters affecting them. For example it is now known that combustion excitation can be reduced by turbocharging but at the same time piston slap excitation is usually increased. Therefore it is important to study each single source in isolation using realistic simulation techniques to establish the controlling parameters and leading towards an overall optimisation programme. After a review of developed and possible simulation techniques, the paper presents a piston slap simulation which has been developed to study this source. This technique was briefly introduced during the last fisita congress. In the present paper further progress and results are presented to show the validity and use of this technique by correlating the simulated measurements with those taken for the running engine using the oscillographic method and telemetry. It is concluded that this same technique could be adjusted slightly to simulate other mechanical sources of engine noise such as bearing impacts and gear impacts. /Author/TRRL/
