VEHICLE NOISE WITH SMALL DIESEL ENGINE

Recently, the need for reduction of vehicular noise has become of prime importance in the protection of environment from noise pollution. This paper describes noise reduction studies carried out on the vehicles with 2 to 4 litre direct injection (di) and indirect injection (idi) diesel engines. The diesel engine noise is still the main contributor to the total noise of both light- and heavy-duty vehicles, although the contribution of the former is somewhat smaller than that of the latter. In small diesel vehicle, however, the exhaust system which tends to produce a high shell noise level due to the engine transmitted vibration has become another major noise source, in addition to the engine noise itself. With respect to the diesel engines under the above category, the contribution of mechanical noise to the complete engine is greater in the idi engines than in the di engines and a large part of such mechanical noise has proved to originate from piston loading, as is the case with combustion noise. A rattle from timing gear and transmission gear caused by large torque fluctuation in idling diesel engines poses another serious problem. This paper also deals with the practical measures which have been developed for noise control at the aforesaid sources. /Author/TRRL/
