WHAT TYPE OF THE MECHANICAL GUIDANCE IS RECOMMENDED FOR THE DUAL MODE SYSTEM?
The dual mode concept which is proposed as a method for solution of the urban transportation problems, embodies what may be termed the customary benefits of an automated captive vehicle transportation system, while still retaining the flexibility of the conventional automotive vehicle, independent of the availability of special guideway facilities. An attempt is made in this paper to classify the mechanical guidance of the conventional automotive vehicle into four basic types: no steer, front wheel steer, rear wheel steer and four-wheel steer. For each type, the fundamental equations governing the vehicle in following the required guide-path are obtained. Results of vehicle stability analysis are presented to explain the features of each type and recommend suitable types of the mechanical guidance for the dual mode vehicles which have the conventional automotive chassis. /Author/TRRL/
