3000-HOUR ENDURANCE TEST OF THE DIESEL PRIME MOVER FOR ADAPTS

The Office of Research and Development, U.S. Coast Guard, has developed an Air Deliverable Anti-Pollution Transfer System (ADAPTS). This system is to be used to minimize oil pollution by permitting the rapid removal of oil from a stranded vessel. The ADAPTS system includes a transfer pumping subsystem driven by a diesel prime mover, floating temporary oil storage containers, and an air delivery subsystem. The report summaries the results of a 3000-hour endurance test of the 40-horsepower AVCO-Lycoming diesel engine used in the ADAPTS system. Several minor defects were found during the test. Some were corrected before the completion of the test. Others remain for future correction. In general the engine performed well and is considered acceptable for its intended use in the ADAPTS system.
