APPLICATION OF A NEW STATIC TEST RIG TO THE PROBLEM OF VEHICLE CONTROL

APPLICATION D'UN NOUVEAU BANC D'ESSAI A POSTE FIXE AU PROBLEME DU CONTROLE DES VEHICULES

This paper, which is accompanied by a film, explains how a new dynamometer using the car itself with its same motions than on the road - dynamometer for which several papers had been published for its uses in research for vehicle dynamics and braking - can be particularly applied to control the dynamic performances of a car, with advantages if compared with corresponding tests on roads which are often used by manufacturers, legislation authorities and users or their representative bodies. The case of braking, where the different performances (stopping distance, deceleration, stability, progressivity, response's delay of brakes, etc...) can be controlled even in severe (in speed or deceleration) conditions in a short duration of time is particularly disclosed with its corresponding instantaneous graphics and measures (braking ratio, pivoting torque, braking coefficient, etc...) which are not possible in road tests, for example the measurements of the reaction between wheels and ground. The paper reports also other performances than braking which can be, eventually, controlled in the same test with a braking test or with a short additional duration: acceleration, suspension, direction, tyres, road holding, etc. A conclusion is given, relative to the possibilities of using such tests for practical applications. /Author/TRRL/ abstract form.
