EVALUATION OF GRAVEL ROADS IN THE ASPECTS OF MAINTENANCE
BEDOEMNING AV GRUSVAEGARS TILLSTAAND FRAAN UNDERHALLSSYNPUNKT
In the investigation the state of gravel roads was characterized by the three factors surface evenness, binding and dusting tendency and by travel speed. These measurements gave relations between the number of vehicles passing after treatment of the road and travel speed. Treatments considered are watering, grading and salting. This suggested that the maintenance cycle is composed of three phases, (1) an initial phase covering the binding process, (2) a stationary phase during which serviceability is unchanged and (3) a decay phase, characterized by deterioration of the road and reduction of travel speed. Attempts were then made to establish a correlation between the three serviceability factors and travel speed, the purpose being to obtain decision criteria for treatment of the road. Such criteria also have to be based upon considerations of road maintenance economy. The evaluation of the roads was carried out using a classification scheme based on evenness, binding and dusting tendency. In the final scheme adopted surface evenness is divided into four classes, dusting tendency into three classes and binding into four classes. Synthesis of the three quantities is carried out by means of a diagram. /TRRL/
