FUTURE PROSPECTS OF THE HYDROSTATIC POWER TRANSMISSION

PERSPECTIVES D'AVENIR DE LA TRANSMISSION HYDROSTATIQUE DE PUISSANCE

The actual requirements for: a wiser use of energy; lower maintenance costs; lower pollution level, claim that for a certain amount of final output the installed power be as low as possible. As a direct consequence, the power transmission has to operate with a very high efficiency over a working range as wide as possible. In the automotive field, that condition is necessary but not sufficient. More specific qualities are required such as: (a) permanent operation of the engine at an economical and non-pollutant speed; (b) slight in volume or weight; (c) ease of installation; (d) ability to provide a high torque, at low speed, with no time limitation; (e) tightness; (f) high reliability degree and low maintenance costs. A hydrostatic transmission satisfied the above requirements better the higher the pressure of oil, the power being the product of pressure by flow. 600 to 700 bars (9000 to 10000 psi) are now reached in modern techniques. In addition, the hydrostatic transmission: is fully automatic, providing easy driving; makes possible to drive the 4 wheels, independently, improving the behaviour of heavy vehicles under hard conditions; reduces the initial and maintenance cost of tyres, due to the fact the 4 wheels are also independent from the suspension standpoint. The initial performances of the transmission remain unaffected during periods of about 10,000 hours without maintenance. /TRRL/
