THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SOME GRAVELS USED IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN IRELAND

This report describes an investigation into the engineering properties of some gravels and crushed stone used in roadworks throughout Ireland over the last decade. Gravels from sixteen sites and twenty sources and crushed stone from three sites and two sources were tested to determine the physical characteristics of gravel which affect their performance as roadmaking materials. Work carried out on site and in the laboratory is described, and test results are reported in some detail and discussed. The report has been prepared principally as a working document which records in detail the test results and observations on the performances of gravels and crushed stone tested to date. The next phase of the research programme which will include the analysis of the relationships between the physical characteristics of the gravels and their performances in the road will be the subject of further reports. /TRRL/
