PNEUMATIC PITCH INDUCING SYSTEM FOR ICEBREAKERS

Improvement in icebreaking capability of icebreaking ships by inducing pitching motions has been conceived by several inventors and has been tested in various forms. The most successful system is a pneumatically induced pitching system, PIPS, which generates large amplitude motions at about the natural pitching frequency of the vessel. The paper describes an analytical procedure for determining the performance and optimizing the system. Parametric studies were conducted with various values of principal parameters such as air pressure, flow rate, tank size, and tank hull openings. An optimum design considering both the analytical factors and practical considerations has been developed for an existing icebreaker. The system was tested in a model basin, confirming the results of the analysis and demonstrating the significant gain in icebreaking performance of the ship.
