This paper reviews a cross-section of such vehicles now being operated by the U. S. Navy from the standpoint of the number and type of engine, transmission and thruster arrangement selected for each. The sequence of vehicles considered is: Hydrofoils, Air Cushion Craft, Displacement/Planing Boats. It is concluded that the need for complex power transmissions is the most salient feature of this class of vehicles.
