THE ROLE OF SMART CARDS IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT INTEGRATION: LESSONS FOR SANTIAGO
In an attempt to reduce travel time and increase ridership on public transit, smart card technology has been applied to integrated fare payment systems in Europe, Asia and North America. This paper reviews the results of this technology and suggests the possible benefits and costs of developing and implementing such a system in Santiago, Chile.
