EFFICIENT OPERATION OF RUNWAYS
Air traffic control (ATC) is an area in which such operations research disciplines as applied probability, queueing theory, scheduling, and network analysis can be used to good advantage. In this respect, problems related to the efficient use of the runways seem particularly suited for this type of analysis. More recently, much attention within the OR community has been given to runway problems. The relaization has dawned that, at least for the immediate future, the number of available runways at major hubs is not likely to increase substantially. In this light, modeling and analysis of runway operations can be extremely helpful in (1) understanding the capabilities and limitations of the present system; (2) anticipating potential future problems; and (3) evaluating alternatives for improvement. The remainder of this chapter, after briefly describing operations in the terminal area, will discuss some work on runway usage that has been performed by the author and will briefly identify potential problems and improvements.
