USING TRAFFIC CONFLICTS TO ASSESS THE SAFETY OF ROAD DESIGN ELEMENTS

Intended as an aid in trying to discover the cause of accidents at particular intersection locations, the technique of 'traffic conflict' is being developed at TRRL. The technique involves defining conflicts in terms of evasive action by road users and classifying each incident according to severity. Such records can be made by observers on-site or by time-lapse cine-film equipment. Results show the identification of hazards at certain junctions and the effect of installing traffic signals, the results of introducing a mini-roundabout at an intersection, an evaluation of a traffic signal installation at an urban intersection, and, the effect of increasing the entry lanes at an intersection. /TRRL/
