SAFETY HELMETS FOR MOTORCYCLE RIDERS: AN EVALUATION OF SAFETY STANDARDS

Based upon an extensive investigation of head injuries occurring in motorcycle accidents, a critical analysis of the world's major helmet standards and a laboratory assessment of the protective capabilities of currently available helmets, this paper is largely a critique of the Canadian Standards Association Standard D230, "Safety Helmets for Motorcycle Riders." The Standard has been shown to be inadequate in terms of impact and coverage requirements. It is also inadequate for retention system and abrasion resistance requirements. The test methods impose inputs that are not severe enough and posses pass/fail criteria that are too lenient. The test equipemtn and techniques are outmoded and incapable of effectively assessing the performance of a contemporary helmet. /Author/
