KEY JORDAN LINE TO BE UPGRADED
In one of its first major efforts at privatization, the government of Jordan is negotiating with a U.S. consortium to upgrade, expand, and operate the state-owned Aqaba Railway Company, a 500-km line that carries phosphate, the Hashemite Kingdom's leading export. Lexington, Massachusetts-based Raytheon Engineers and Constructors Incorporated has teamed with Wisconsin Central Transportation Corporation, Rosemont, Illinois, to upgrade 300 km of existing track and build two new lines totaling approximately 55 km. Raytheon would handle design and construction, while Wisconsin Central would operate and maintain the line for 25 years. Work is set to start in March 1999.
