AIRPORT BEAM CRACKS ARE FILLED, WRAPPED IN TIME FOR HOLIDAYS
A contractor is beating the clock on $8.5 million in nonemergency, remedial structural work and waterproofing at a 6-year-old Pittsburgh International Airport parking garage. Meanwhile, a complaint is pending against two fo the original contractors of the $26.6-million garage in an attempt to recover fees, costs, and expenses associated with the remedial work. The county decided to reinforce the structure after discovering, while inspecting waterproofing repairs, a pattern of cracking on the last 8 ft (2 m) of each end of the stems of the 61-ft (19-m) long, 2-ft 4-in (0.7-m) deep double-Ts. Analysis of extensive tests show the cracks are "indicative of shear failure," and the county claims they are attributable to "improper and/or inadequate prestressing, improper and/or inadequate bonding between prestressed reinforcing strands and concrete, improper and/or inadequate prestress at the end zones of the beams, improper and/or inadequate concrete, and/or incorrect placement of the hanger and/or reinforcing bars relative to the beams' dapped ends."
