HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS AND SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS

Effort expended in eliminating highway hazards are briefly described, and it is pointed out that it is only through further active effort of the various state, local and private agencies that better highway safety could be achieved. Congress has emplasized 6 roadway safety programs in the Highway Safety Act of 1973: elimination of roadside obstacles, railroad grade crossing protection, improvement at high hazard accident locations, hazardous bridge reconstruction, a pavement marking program, and safer roads demonstration program for roads not on the Federal and highway system. Obligations for the six special emphasis programs totaled $27.7 million through the first 3 months of fiscal year 1975.
