CAVITATION ON MODEL PROPELLERS WITH BOUNDARY LAYER TRIPS

As a first step in investigating this problem, a series of tests were repeated with a model propeller displaying abnormal cavitation effects. In order to more closely simulate prototype conditions at high Reynolds number, both boundary layer trips and artificial sand roughness were tried. The model propeller selected was a special. Variations between the model and prototype wake were adjusted for by operating the propeller at the proper thrust coefficient. Further, open water tests were carried out over a range of Reynolds number. Since the use of boundary layer trips in this application is rather new, some details of trip selection are offered to form a basis for further experiments, if the technique proves useful.
