HANDLING TERMINATIONS AND DEMOTIONS

The most challenging meetings that managers are occasionally required to conduct with subordinates involve terminations, dismissals, or discharges; demotions or reduced responsibility; or lateral transfers and reassignments. Managers have the power to make demotions and dismissals useful experiences, if not necessarily enjoyable ones. When done well, terminations, demotions, and transfers can be helpful in redirecting employees, less stressful in the long run for all involved, and more satisfying to the manager, while increasing his or her respect. People may need some of the following kinds of help from their manager: several repetitions of the key points of their performance records; details about severance pay; information about placement agencies, headhunters, or even potential employers; information about career counselors; advice about the disposition or adjustment of insurance plans, bonus or incentive plans, retirement or stock purchase plans, and similar benefits; and information on personal counselors, self-help groups, community agencies, and other social services.
