RECONSTRUCTION OF UNDERLINE BRIDGES D84/84A - RAVENSCOURT PARK
Bridges D84 and D84A carry four tracks of London Underground's District and Piccadilly Lines between Hammersmith and Ravenscourt Park stations, over a small street behind the Kings Mall shopping development. Access to the site is severely limited by residential properties, a multi-storey car park and delivery access to the shopping centre. Access is further restricted by a disused brick arch viaduct which is at a higher level and sandwiched between the two structures. This paper describes the need for reconstruction, the development of the design solutions and the logistics of construction, both within the urban environment and also around the railway, including the flagship Piccadilly Line route to Heathrow. A large part of the site work was carried out in three weekend possessions. Utilization of this time was maximized by what is believed to be the most complicated London Underground Ltd possession and protection arrangements ever devised for a bridge renewal, with 'wrong-way' running of passenger trains on one bay of the bridge while adjacent bays were being demolished. Thus the primary aim of keeping scheduled Piccadilly Line services running throughout the whole construction process was achieved. The site is compact and contains all the challenges of urban engineering, including the business need to optimize long-term solutions and maintain railway operation during the construction phase. The project value was #4,2 million. (A)
