NEW SAFETY FROM OCCUPATIONAL NOISE HAZARDS
A personal noise dosimeter, designed to be worn on the shirt pocket or lapel, has been developed at the Naval Ocean Systems Center. The dosimeter transforms sound pressure to light intensity and records the accumulated light output on a small piece of photographic film. The photometric density of the developed film is proportional to the sound exposure level. The developed film can be readily interpreted by a densitometer similar to those used to read film badges which record radiation exposure. The NOSC noise dosimeter is a practical safety device which can help eliminate occupational noise hazards. Previous devices for the same purpose using conventional analog or digital techniques entailed high production costs and complex electronic components.
