SINGAPORE AIRPORT--GATEWAY TO THE ORIENT

General relations regarding the growth of an airport are examined. In the case of Singapore, the unusual situation arises that the airport of an island with a total population of about 2.2 million, which had almost 3.3 million international passengers in 1973, had in one year an increase of 29.8% in the number of passengers. The islands strategic geographic location places it at the aerial crossroads between Southeast Asia and Australia on one hand, and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe on the other. Attention is given to aspects of airport expansion, the terminal building, the runway and apron system, and cargo services.
