TANK CLEANING METHODS
This article reviews the important methods of gas freeing and tank cleaning used to remove the danger of combustion. Fixed tank cleaning machines are found to be more efficient and economical than portable machines. Of the three methods used to make a tank atmosphere safe for cleaning, "too lean", "too rich" and "inert", the former is chosen as the best to employ. Two methods of removing oil, movement of ballast and skimming, are investigated in detail in conjunction with force draft ventilation. Results of tests show these procedures to increase efficiency of cleaning operations.
