AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY FOR INSTALLATION OF MAIN SHAFTING INCLUDING MAIN-ENGINE REDUCTION GEAR ON TURBINE SHIPS

The Author, of Ishikawajima-Harima H.I., describes full-scale experimental investigations that have enabled his firm to carry out the installation of the main shafting and reduction gearing in newly-built steam turbine ships before they leave the building dock. The ships used in the investigations were a 28,800-dwt (50,000-hp) container ship, and 208,500-dwt (33,000-hp), 268,000-dwt (36,000-hp), and 477,000-dwt (45,000-hp) tankers. Test measurements were carried out in several sister ships in the case of the 208,500-dwt and 268,000-dwt tankers. The investigations, experimental methods, and solutions to the various problems encountered are explained in some detail. The procedures developed for aligning the shafting and gearing (including inspection of tooth contact) in dock, and for checking the installation when the ship is afloat, are summarized.
