AIR-FUEL CONTROL IN A MICROPROCESSOR-BASED SYSTEM FOR IMPROVING AUTOMOBILE FUEL ECONOMY

The air-fuel mixture requirements for an automobile equipped with a proposed microprocessor-based system for improving automobile fuel economy were analyzed. This system is for acquiring data from an automobile and controlling fuel flow and spark timing to achieve fuel savings and reduced exhaust emissions. The air-fuel control in this system is adaptive with respect to changing operating conditions. It is expected that the proposed system would provide the following benefits: (1) improvement of fuel economy by 10 to 30%, (2) reduction of exhaust emissions to a level below the government standards without the use of a catalytic converter, (3) significant reduction of maintenance costs of ignition and fuel flow systems, and (4) a continuous self-tuning capability to maintain peak automobile efficiency.
