ADVISORY COUNCIL ON ENERGY CONSERVATION - PAPER 5 - ROAD VEHICLE AND ENGINE DESIGN: SHORT AND MEDIUM TERM ENERGY CONSIDERATIONS

The report is the result of a study by a working group on road vehicle and engine design. The object was to examine the importance of any increase in efficiency of vehicles, in view of their large oil consumption, as a worthwhile contribution to reducing energy consumption in the UK. The report discusses the subject as follows - part 1 - fuel savings from change in passenger car design, part 2 - possible improvements in the fuel consumption of commercial vehicles including freight, buses and coaches. Part 3 - possibilities for improvements in the fuel consumption of conventional reciprocating engines: improved power units for motor vehicles, part 4 - exhaust pollution regulations - fuel consumption, part 5 - comments and conclusions, part 6 - recommendations. Appendices are included which contain excerpts from a report on fuel consumption of buses by London transport, as well as a table of UK refinery demand patterns up to 1974. /TRRL/
