STUDY OF OPERATOR PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT FOR DIFFERENT MODES OF TRANSPORTATION : PART I : AIR TRANSPORTATION

Human factors have been recognized as important elements of transportation safety. The authors have carried out an extensive literature review on the subject of operator performance measurements for different modes of transportation. The primary objective of the review was to find tests/devices that could detect or predict impairment while the operator is performing its task. The review was disappointing, no tests were found that could detect or predict performance impairment. Only a simple device called the "dead man button" could be found. In this first paper, a survey is presented on articles that treat problems related to measuring and detecting operator performance in the field of air transportation. Articles concerning air traffic controller and pilot performance are reviewed.(A)
