A SHORT GUIDE TO THE CHOICE OF CONCRETE PUMPS: BUT IS HIGH PRESSURE ALWAYS NEEDED?
The article briefly discusses the selection of concrete pumps in which the choice is usually determined by considerations of volumetric output and maximum head pressure. These considerations pay little attention to efficiency of the valve systems as the energy available at the start of the pipeline is the important factor. Depending on the type of valve used and the resistance offered to concrete in changing cross-section, so a pressure loss occurs between the piston head and the start of the pipeline. Thus the greater the inefficiency of the valve system, the greater is the piston pressure needed to move the concrete. Mixes have therefore to be designed to withstand this increased pressure which can result in an unnecessarily expensive concrete. /TRRL/
