COMPUTER PROGRAMS FOR HIGHWAY DESIGN
PROGRAMMI PER COMPUTERS NELLO PROGETTAZIONE STRADALE
This paper reviews existing computer programs for highway design and associated applications. Two broad classifications, independent programs and integrated programs, are made. Independent programs are described as those applicable to the single phases of a project, capable of solving the specific problems (e.g. The calculation of a transition curve) contained therein. Integrated programs are those resulting from the necessity to resolve all the component phases of a project in a sequential manner, using the results from each preceding program in the successive project phase. Programs described include: COGO (USA), the SETRA system (France), the Hungarian SUITE (Hungary), the British Integrated Program System (BIPS) phases I and II, and the VENUS programs I and II developed by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, Crowthorne, Berks. An appendix contains addresses for further reference regarding each of the 8 programs described in the article.
