DESIGN OF CABLES AND THEIR ANCHORAGES IN CABLE-STAYED GIRDER BRIDGES
Although numerous papers have been published on structural alternative arrangements of cable-stayed bridges very little has been documented on the choice and design of cable stays, cable terminals and their anchorages for transferring forces to the tower and the bridge deck. The paper, therefore, restricts its scope to cables and anchorages only and discusses the important considerations in the design of cables, variation in their modulus of elasticity, types of cable sockets and their fatigue strength and possible anchorage systems for connecting cables to the tower and the deck. The paper presents the latest state of development of the technology in this field and discusses the alternative schemes by illustrating typical cases from the recently constructed bridges in Germany.
