This article deals mainly with petrol-driven engines. A study is presented of the influence of the various factors affecting consumption and of the consequences of regulations on the development of engines. The main regulatory aspects are standards governing pollution caused by exhaust gases and noise standards. Mention is also made of the definition of fuels (octane index) and of the speed limit. /TRRL/
